Grooveshark Is Awesome
At the Ultra Music Festival in Miami, I ran into a guy. He gave me his card, which stated that he was the creator of Grooveshark. Fortunately I actually tried the site when I got home. I’m glad I did – it’s very cool.
This post really serves two purposes. Foremost, it’s for testing the Grooveshark plugin for Wordpress, which is super awesome, and produces nifty widgets such as the following:
Secondly, it’s to let other people know about this awesome service before it gets sued into the ground by the recording industry. Unfortunately it’s only a matter of time. I’m glad to see them trying to be legitimate about it, but no major record company will ever sign on to their business model of letting anyone listen to anything at any time on demand for free with no force-fed ads. Hell, they’ve already been rejected by EMI.
Alas, such is life. But for now, enjoy the music.

No? I’m curious, what business incentive is there to allow a service to give away user-uploaded music for free on demand, when the alternative is the user actually paying money?
Don’t get me wrong, I love the service. I wish it weren’t the case. But realistically, no major, mainstream record label is going to sign onto this.
I’ll tell you what. When they get one of the big four RIAA labels – that’s EMI, Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, or Warner Music Group – onboard, I’ll admit I’m wrong. So far they have none . Until then, they’re a music sharing service which will always be on the wrong side of some very influential teams of lawyers.
